Hiring an installer?

Ask what material they’re using

Two bids can look the same on paper and be very different fences. Before you sign, ask these four questions.

  1. Who makes it?

A real manufacturer stands behind its product. If nobody can tell you who made your fence, that tells you something.

  2. How thick is it?

Hold a vinyl picket up to the light: thin vinyl glows. For aluminum, ask about picket, rail and post wall thickness.

  3. What protects the finish?

Vinyl needs titanium dioxide UV inhibitors. Aluminum needs an architectural-grade powder coat (AAMA 2604).

  4. Can I read the warranty?

Ask for it in writing. Check how long it lasts, what it covers and who honors it.
